This is a circular model of the Hero's jouney. Notice that it is multilayered - the events take place in certain locations, and that it can be repeated within a story. This model, developed by famous Mythology scholar Joseph Campbell, is based on his extensive study of worldwide mythologies. Campbell theorized that there were common plot points in myths about heroes worldwide that can be traced back to Carl Jung's theory of archetypes that exist in the minds of all people regardless of their origin.

This intro page will serve as a primer on "The Hero's Journey," the underlying structure for studying and comparing various classical and contemporary stories of heroes. The image to the right is a visual layout of the stages of the heroes journey. You can apply this model to many of the myths you will read and watch relating to heroes. Below the images is a sample movie illustrating how the hero's journey might look for a fictional hero.
